What Are Betting Odds and Why Do They Matter?
When you place a bet at BetKing, the odds shown next to each selection tell you two things simultaneously: how likely BetKing considers that outcome to be, and how much you will be paid if you are right. These two pieces of information are wrapped up in one number, and understanding how to read that number is the single most useful skill a bettor can develop.
Most Pakistani bettors start out treating odds as simple indicators of who is favoured to win. A team priced at 1.25 is a heavy favourite; a team at 4.50 is a significant underdog. That basic reading is correct, but it only scratches the surface. The real value in understanding odds comes from recognising when BetKing's pricing — or any bookmaker's pricing — either overstates or understates the true probability of an outcome. That gap between the implied probability in the odds and your own assessment of the real probability is where experienced bettors find value.
At BetKing, odds are available in three standard formats: Decimal (most common internationally and the default display on BetKing), Fractional (traditional UK format) and Moneyline (American format). Pakistani players tend to find Decimal odds the most intuitive because the number directly tells you the total return per unit stake — no additional calculation needed. You can switch between formats in your BetKing account settings at any time.
One more important concept to understand from the start: no bookmaker, including BetKing, prices odds at exactly the true probability of each outcome. The combined implied probabilities across a market always add up to more than 100%. That excess is called the overround or margin, and it is how bookmakers ensure long-term profitability. Knowing this does not mean you cannot win — it means you need to identify genuinely value bets rather than placing wagers randomly.

The Three Odds Formats at BetKing – Explained Simply
The same underlying probability can be expressed in three different ways. BetKing lets you choose whichever format you find easiest to read. Here is how each one works.
Decimal Odds – The Default at BetKing
Decimal odds are the most straightforward format. The number shown represents your total return per unit staked — profit plus your original stake. This is BetKing's default display format and the one most Pakistani online bettors work with.
Profit = (Stake × Decimal Odds) − Stake
Example: You bet Rs 1,000 at decimal odds of 2.50.
- Total Return = Rs 1,000 × 2.50 = Rs 2,500
- Profit = Rs 2,500 − Rs 1,000 = Rs 1,500
Odds of 2.00 mean an even-money bet — you double your stake on a win. Odds below 2.00 are shorter than even money (favourite); odds above 2.00 are longer (underdog).
| Odds | Rs 1,000 Stake | Profit |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | Rs 1,500 | Rs 500 |
| 2.00 | Rs 2,000 | Rs 1,000 |
| 2.50 | Rs 2,500 | Rs 1,500 |
| 3.00 | Rs 3,000 | Rs 2,000 |
| 5.00 | Rs 5,000 | Rs 4,000 |
| 10.00 | Rs 10,000 | Rs 9,000 |
Fractional Odds – The Traditional Format
Fractional odds express profit relative to stake. The numerator (top number) is your profit; the denominator (bottom number) is the stake that produces that profit. Your original stake is returned separately on top of the profit.
Total Return = Stake + Profit
Example: Odds of 3/2 (spoken as "three to two") on a Rs 1,000 bet:
- Profit = Rs 1,000 × (3 ÷ 2) = Rs 1,500
- Total Return = Rs 1,000 + Rs 1,500 = Rs 2,500
Note: 3/2 fractional equals 2.50 decimal — same underlying probability, different presentation. Fractions where the numerator is smaller than the denominator (e.g. 1/2) indicate a short-priced favourite.
| Fractional | Decimal Equal | Implied % |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | 1.50 | 66.7% |
| 1/1 (Evens) | 2.00 | 50.0% |
| 3/2 | 2.50 | 40.0% |
| 2/1 | 3.00 | 33.3% |
| 4/1 | 5.00 | 20.0% |
| 9/1 | 10.00 | 10.0% |
Moneyline Odds – The American Format
Moneyline odds use positive and negative numbers based around a Rs 100 unit. A positive number (+) shows how much profit a Rs 100 bet yields on an underdog. A negative number (–) shows how much you must stake to win Rs 100 on a favourite.
Favourite (–): Profit = Stake × (100 ÷ |Moneyline|)
Example 1: +150 on a Rs 1,000 bet → Profit = Rs 1,000 × (150/100) = Rs 1,500
Example 2: –200 on a Rs 1,000 bet → Profit = Rs 1,000 × (100/200) = Rs 500
Moneyline odds are less commonly used among Pakistani bettors but occasionally appear in US sports and some BetKing international markets. You can always switch to Decimal in your settings for cleaner reading.
| Moneyline | Decimal Equal | Rs 1,000 Profit |
|---|---|---|
| –200 | 1.50 | Rs 500 |
| +100 | 2.00 | Rs 1,000 |
| +150 | 2.50 | Rs 1,500 |
| +200 | 3.00 | Rs 2,000 |
| +400 | 5.00 | Rs 4,000 |
| +900 | 10.00 | Rs 9,000 |

Implied Probability – The Key to Finding Value at BetKing
Every set of odds contains an implied probability — your conversion of the odds number into a percentage chance of the outcome occurring. This is the fundamental concept that separates recreational bettors from people who consistently find value at BetKing and elsewhere.
So BetKing odds of 2.50 imply a 40% chance (1 ÷ 2.50 × 100). Odds of 1.67 imply roughly 60%. Odds of 4.00 imply 25%. The calculation takes five seconds with any phone calculator.
Here is why this matters in practice. Suppose Pakistan are playing a relatively weaker Test side at home. BetKing prices Pakistan's win at 1.40 — implying a 71.4% win probability. Now, if you analyse the conditions, recent form, pitch reports and both squads carefully and genuinely believe Pakistan's actual win probability is closer to 80%, then the 1.40 odds represent value. Your assessment suggests Pakistan are under-priced at BetKing. That is a value bet.
Conversely, if you think Pakistan's real win probability in the same match is closer to 65%, then BetKing is pricing them too short and the bet has negative value for you — even though Pakistan are still the most likely winners. Understanding the difference between "likely to win" and "good bet" is the cornerstone of smart betting.
Of course, honest assessment is hard. The temptation is always to be overconfident in your team or in your own analysis. The best BetKing bettors have two characteristics in common: they are selective about which markets they have a genuine opinion on, and they keep records of their bets so they can track their actual hit rate versus implied probability over time and identify where their judgment is genuinely sharp.
Understanding the Overround at BetKing
Take any BetKing match market and add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes. You will always get a number above 100% — typically between 103% and 110% depending on the sport and the competitiveness of BetKing's pricing on that market. This excess over 100% is the overround, also called the vigorish or juice.
For example, a BetKing football match might show:
- Home Win: 2.10 → implied 47.6%
- Draw: 3.40 → implied 29.4%
- Away Win: 3.60 → implied 27.8%
- Total: 104.8% — overround of 4.8%
That extra 4.8% represents BetKing's theoretical edge. A smaller overround is better for bettors because the odds are closer to fair value. BetKing's cricket and football markets are among its most competitive and tend to carry lower overrounds than niche sports or outrights. Focusing your betting on well-priced, liquid markets is one of the most straightforward ways to improve your long-term results at BetKing.
Common Betting Markets and How BetKing Prices Them
Knowing what each market means is just as important as understanding the odds format. Here are the bet types you will encounter most at BetKing across cricket and football.
Match Winner (1X2 / Moneyline)
The simplest market — pick who wins the match. In cricket it is a two-way market (no draw in T20/ODI). In football BetKing offers 1X2 including a draw option.
Over / Under (Totals)
Bet on whether the total runs, goals or other measurable events in a match will go over or under a line set by BetKing. E.g. Over 2.5 goals in a Premier League match.
Asian Handicap
BetKing removes the draw from football by giving one team a fractional head start. Levels the playing field between unevenly matched sides and removes the draw outcome entirely.
Top Batsman / Bowler
Bet on which player will score the most runs or take the most wickets in a match or innings. BetKing prices each player individually based on form, position and conditions.
Accumulator (Acca)
Combine multiple selections into one bet at BetKing. Each selection's odds are multiplied together. Higher potential returns but all legs must win for the bet to pay out.
In-Play / Live Odds
BetKing updates its odds in real time during matches. In-play betting lets you react to what is happening on the pitch with odds that reflect the current state of the game.
Accumulators – Higher Returns, Higher Risk
Accumulators are one of the most popular bet types at BetKing among Pakistani players because the potential returns can be genuinely exciting on modest stakes. A four-team football accumulator with each selection priced around 2.00 (even money) would pay out around 16 times your stake if all four selections win. That kind of return on a Rs 500 stake — Rs 8,000 back — is naturally appealing.
The trade-off is clear: every additional leg added to an accumulator multiplies your potential return but also multiplies the number of things that need to go right. Experienced BetKing bettors typically limit accumulators to three to five selections and apply the same value assessment to each leg that they would to a standalone single bet. An accumulator where every leg genuinely represents value is a good bet at BetKing; an accumulator where you are including dubious legs just to inflate the potential return is a losing strategy long-term.
BetKing also offers a number of Acca insurance and Acca boost promotions at various times. If your accumulator fails on the final leg, Acca insurance can return your stake as a free bet. Check your BetKing promotions tab regularly as these offers can meaningfully change the expected value of accumulator bets when they are active.
